Malonzo scores 32 points in Ginebra’s first game against Rain or Shine

Even though Jamie Malonzo had a black eye, he still led Barangay Ginebra to a 113–107 win over Rain or Shine on Friday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. It was a good start for Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Philippine Cup.

After getting into a fight in a restaurant this summer, Malonzo was able to play and scored a career-high 32 points, including five three-pointers. He grabbed eight rebounds, blocked four shots, had three assists, and stole two balls to set the tone for the first win.

Maverick Ahanmisi scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out nine assists. He took over as the main playmaker when Scottie Thompson got hurt and couldn’t play.

The Gin Kings also won all three games against the Elasto Painters.

Malonzo scored 15 points in the first quarter to give the Gin Kings a seven-point lead, which grew to 15 points by the end of the third quarter. He didn’t look like he had hurt his eye at all.

“We’re really proud of Jamie for what he did tonight, how he did, and how he came back to practice and let his game do the talking,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said.

With 16 seconds left, Adrian Nocum made a layup that pulled the E-Painters within four points, 111–107. But Ahanmisi got called for a foul and made two free throws to seal the deal.

In more than 40 minutes of play, Christian Standhardinger had a double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and one steal. Japeth Aguilar scored 17 points and grabbed three rebounds.

Anton Asistio had a good game other than the ROS loss. He scored 21 points with five three-pointers, four rebounds, two assists, and no turnovers in less than 23 minutes.
